O comunicado final oficial:

The new era is dawning on April 25, 2013

BASELWORLD 2012 closed its doors today after eight highly successful days. With 104,300 (+1% / 2011) professional visitors from all the different continents, the show recorded a top-notch result once again. The exhibitors declared themselves to be highly satisfied with the course of business and with the media presence: 3,320 journalists (+9%) marks a new record. And now the completely revamped BASELWORLD 2013 World Watch and Jewellery Show next spring is being eagerly awaited.

The biggest and most important show for the watch and jewellery industry, BASELWORLD, has confirmed its leading position worldwide over the past few days. Coming from more than 100 countries, 104,300 specialist buyers streamed into the exhibition halls in Basel, and the 3320 (+9% / 2011) accredited journalists marked a new record for the media presence at any time during the history of BASELWORLD.

Strength of the world show confirmed once again

At the end of the 40th World Watch and Jewellery Show, the exhibitors declared themselves to be particularly pleased with the level of sales they had achieved. At the same time, the industry is awaiting the next BASELWORLD with great anticipation. Thanks to the new hall infrastructure, new stands and a new concept, 2013 will be heralding in a new era for this specialist show.

Jacques J. Duchêne, Chairman of the Exhibitors' Committee, confirms this as follows: "It was a fascinating week and truly a good year for us exhibitors. We are highly satisfied. Nearly all the brands will now be investing in their new stand for BASELWORLD 2013 and enhancing their presence still further. This highlights the fact that we have a great deal of confidence in this event, because the world show will be giving us exhibitors even more opportunities to experience positive development in future."

For François Thiébaud, Chairman of the Swiss Exhibitors' Committee, BASELWORLD was a complete success: "The 2012 edition has confirmed the success of this unique platform, which brings together the watch and jewellery industry from all over the world. The positive results of the past two years allow us to look into the future full of optimism: we are reckoning with an excellent start to the new BASELWORLD 2013."

Patek Philippe also reported an outstanding level of business: "BASELWORLD offers us a privileged opportunity to welcome our partners. We registered an exceedingly positive mood amongst our customers throughout the entire show. We are already looking forward to coming back next year", said Jasmina Steele, International Communication Director at Patek Philippe.

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-Chairman of Chopard, underlines the global importance of the event: "All our markets worldwide were well represented this year. In addition, the media presence was at a record level."

Françoise Bezzola, Vice President Communication at TAG Heuer, notes: "BASELWORLD 2012 was an opportunity for us to introduce Cameron Diaz as a new brand ambassador. On the sales side, we were able to welcome a very large number of retailers, marking an increase of 30% over last year. This show is a not-to-be-missed moment for all players from the world of watches. We will be increasing the size of our stand for 2013 – this will allow us to present our innovations in an even better light."

Nicolas Beau, Directeur International Horlogerie at Chanel, sums up as follows: "An excellent show with a record-breaking number of visits from journalists and the media. Next year, we would like to be able to receive our customers and also the media at our stand in an even more optimum manner. BASELWORLD 2013 will enable us to reflect the importance of Chanel watches for the next ten years to come."

For Hublot too, BASELWORLD 2012 ran entirely satisfactorily: "The show was wonderful. We took considerably more orders than in the previous year. And we are looking forward to being able to present our innovations in an even more suitable setting next year. Our new stand will match the size of our brand and provide us with excellent framework conditions", said Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot as the show came to a close.

Manon Colombies, Director Festina Group International, summed up the show as follows for her company: "Thanks to the top-quality contacts that we were able to foster during this BASELWORLD, we are expecting to be able to further expand our sales network. We will be building a new stand for BASELWORLD 2013 which is commensurate with our position in the watch industry. This major project will constitute an architectural challenge and reflect the spirit of the Festina Group."

Great satisfaction amongst the jewellery brands too

For Giuseppe Picchiotti, the owner of Picchiotti, BASELWORLD is of key importance for the jewellery brands. "We are happy in respect of the sales we have achieved. Precisely our business with South East Asia ran very well indeed. I personally consider the move that BASELWORLD will be making next year to be very important. As of 2013, we will be investing more here and our expectations will be correspondingly greater too."

Walter Häusermann, Chairman of Swiss jewellery brand Furrer-Jacot was highly positive in what he had to say: "Our stand once again met with a good response from customers. The high-level presence of the media for end customers was also gratifying. In future, we expect to be able to welcome even more professional visitors to our stand thanks to the new position that we will have at BASELWORLD 2013."

Finally, a large number of positive echoes are to be heard amongst the suppliers of precious stones too. Hence Bernd Willy Ripp, managing director of Groh + Ripp, sums up BASELWORLD 2012 as follows: "After a highly successful show in 2011 we were able to boost the good result we obtained by a further 25% this time round. The quality of the visitors was exceedingly good. The other precious-stone dealers are similarly highly satisfied."

In the Hall of Universe, in which the joint stands of the participating countries are located, there is a great deal of optimism regarding the future. Ralph Chow, Director Product Promotion of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, underlines this as follows: "The purchasing behaviour was gratifying and the potential in the boom markets, including Russia and Latin America, highly promising. We are now looking forward to our new stand position next year. Buyers will then be able to visit our stands more conveniently."

Nandor von der Luehe, Managing Director of MJM spoke on behalf of the Thailand pavilion: "BASELWORLD 2012 ran highly satisfactorily for the Thai exhibitors in the Hall of Universe. The sales we have achieved lead us to be optimistic for the future. We are now eagerly awaiting the newly-designed BASELWORLD 2013".

New record underlines enormous media interest

The appeal of BASELWORLD for the media increases from one year to the next: with 3320 (+9% / 2011) accredited journalists from more than 70 countries, BASELWORLD 2012 has achieved a new record in terms of media presence. For the exhibitors, the worldwide reports in the specialist, daily, business and lifestyle media as well as in the online media, TV and radio are of major importance.

Jasmina Steele, International Communication Director at Patek Philippe, stresses in this respect: "We received 800 journalists at our stand, which is a considerable increase over previous years. And these included a large number of new contacts with journalists. BASELWORLD enables us to personally attend to a large number of media representatives within a very short period of time."

BASELWORLD 2013: April 25 to May 2, 2013

Sylvie Ritter, Managing Director of BASELWORLD, sums up as follows: "I look back at this successful BASELWORLD 2012 with a certain amount of nostalgia. At the same time, I am looking forward impatiently and with great expectations to the new era that will be dawning for this world show. I am delighted that BASELWORLD 2013 will confirm the excellence of the industry presented here." The next BASELWORLD Watch and Jewellery Show is being held from April 25 to May 2, 2013 in Basel.
