Estrela do hóquei no gelo Wayne Gretzky, novo embaixador relógios Breitling

The greatest ice hockey player of all time is the new ambassador of the specialist of "instruments for professionals", in a stellar encounter between two devotees of excellence.

Canadian-born Wayne Gretzky is a living legend in the world of ice hockey. Nicknamed "the great one", this champion renowned for his professionalism and his fair-play has a record-breaking list of achievements to his credit, including four Stanley Cup Championships, 61 NHL records, and being named 18 times to the All-Star teams. In tribute to his absolute superiority, his famous jersey number, 99, has been retired by all NHL teams.

Within the field of ultra-sturdy and accurate timepieces, Breitling has constantly pushed the boundaries of existing accomplishments. A specialist in technical watches, the brand played a crucial role in the development of the modern chronograph, notably by inventing the first independent pushpiece (1915), the second independent pushpiece (1934) and the first selfwinding chronograph (1969). Its obsession with quality has made it the privileged partner of world aviation. As the only major watch brand to equip all its models with movements chronometer-certified by the COSC, Breitling has also created Caliber 01, the world’s most reliable high-performance selfwinding chronograph movement.

Wayne Gretzky is to star in an advertising campaign intended for North America, along with a plane that has also made its mark on history: the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver, a classic monoplane manufactured between 1948 and 1967, and which is widely regarded as one of the best utility planes of all time. The champion appears wearing Breitling’s flagship model, the Chronomat 01 featuring an ultrasturdy case water-resistant to 500 meters (1,660 ft), an exclusive, powerful design, and powered by the high-performance Caliber 01… Another "Great One".

Ouro derretido, desastre patrimonial

Lido no Luxury Society:

Cognitive Anthropologist and founder of the marketing consultancy, Brain Sells, Dr. Bob Deutsch explores Social Networks versus Luxury Tribes:

The Ground Has Shifted Under Marketers’ Feet. In today’s socially-mediated world, marketers must place greater emphasis on understanding their audience as people instead of simply describing them as consumers. Just satisfying consumers’ immediate wants creates a commodity, not a brand. Luxury brands, especially, need brand. They must impress a brand footprint across all media channels and platforms. Luxury brands require more than a tally of click-throughs.

To build a brand, luxury marketers should not waste time asking what consumers like, need or want; they should discover who these people really are. This requires research techniques that can elicit – and hear — stories about how people feel about their world and the world. The subtext of stories is people’s identities, not their interests.

This modification in perspective will help luxury marketers have a hand in sculpting the changes that are shifting the ground under their feet. These changes include:

From person-as-viewer to person-as-participant to person-as-creator-of-content.
From product-to-person communication to person-to-person conversation.
From information-gathering to experience-gathering.
From brands to “me-as-brand.”
Given these naturally occurring changes, luxury marketers would benefit if they themselves created one additional change: From social networks to social tribes.

Luxury brands “live in” many paradoxes. One such paradox is the tension between creating a sense of exclusivity and scarceness while satisfying the human need for social connectedness and belonging. The rub is that social connectedness and belonging require more than signing up to be included in a social network.

Moreover, social networks are basically free forming and require no organization or face-to-face presence. Hence, social networks allow for the expression of current mindsets, but are not good at moving that mindset into the field of concerted action or conversion. In contrast, if luxury marketers could help gird the formation of tribes, they would gain a larger return on investment.

Five Requirements for Tribal Formation in the Luxury Space

1. Possession of a Unique Revelation: An ideology that in some way rejects the mainstream and is symbolic of an uncompromising idealism and certainty that is expressed with romantic passion and cold logic.

2. A Belief System: A mythology about how the world works and how tribe members and the tribe can maximize “self” in relation to that world.

3. Ritual: the creation of recurrent, exaggerated, stylized and condensed behavioral routines that represent the tribe’s ideology and belief system; this helps establish an institutional memory and a sense of “post-icipation” (a feeling that you were “there” even before you were there).

4. A Distinctive Lexicon: A characteristic lingo and a set of emblems that display membership.

5. In-group/Out-group accentuation: A kind of pseudo-speciation that defines tribal boundaries. The “Other” is not like me.

Once these requirements are satisfied, the motivation for membership is: I am myself, Becoming. Belonging gives you a sense of power to overcome external obstacles and also to expand yourself. In itself this sense is felt as luxurious.

Tribe as Brand

From the tribe-forming perspective, luxury marketing strategies should be aimed at (a) designing a brand persona that is relevant to the public mind and mood, (b) articulating a brand history exemplifying its complexities and evolution, thereby intrinsically buttressing its relevance to the current communal mindset, and (c) portraying current contingencies as consonant with its brand history and persona. The past is embodied in the present is a primary attribute of all luxury products.

In this way, a metaphorical connection is made possible between a person’s “self-story” and the tribe, such that each symbolically reflects the other. This entails three cognitive aspects of belonging that lead to feelings of membership:

1. Familiarity: The tribe is like me.

2. Participation and Trust: The tribe likes me.

3. Power: The tribe is more than me and so can help me become more of me.

By coalescing and satisfying longings at the individual and societal levels, luxury marketers can create a brand idea and a tribal-like belonging to that idea. The result is: loyalty to tribe-as-brand is experienced as loyalty to self.

Dunkin’ Donuts vs. Starbucks: A Basic Example of Two Tribes

A very basic tribal differentiation can be clearly exemplified in the competition between Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks:

1. Each has a different ideology: For Dunkin’ it is, it’s just coffee, and I want to get in and get out as quickly as possible vs. for Starbuck’s, it’s my selection of a coffee is an expression of my temperament and personal style, and I want to be able to relax in a “third place.”

2. Each has a different belief system and attendant self-identities: Dunkin’s, the old-fashioned, regular guy, down-to-earth, who does real things vs. Starbuck’s trendy and fashionable people, oriented to the rewards of sensuality and luxury.

3. Each has different rituals: servers vs. barristers.

4. Each has a different lexicon: small is small vs. small is tall.

5. Most importantly, the two groups of loyal customers express in-group/out-group exaggerations. Here are examples of what Dunkin’ Donut loyalists say about Starbucks goers: “They spend too much time and money on a cup of coffee.” “They are yuppies, ambitious and never satisfied.” “They like to complicate everything.” Starbucks loyalists voice symmetric sentiments about Dunkin’ Donut goers: “They have a cookie-cutter mentality and nothing about them is exceptional.” “Their coffee is as bland and sterile as their customers. I don’t think I’d like those people.”

The same distinctiveness could and should be created for the likes of Tom Ford, Max Mara, Limited and H&M.

Brands As Missions

The present context of the world is conducive to the longing for tribal connections that engage people with passion and purpose. The world is “between mythologies” – it is not what it once was and it does not yet know what it will become. People also feel the world is too fast and too unpredictable. As a member of a tribe, people feel safer and more empowered. Their existential cavities get filled in. Tribal membership aids in the belief that the world is a manageable place and one’s future is assured. If luxury marketers would be mindful of the fact that their brands should have a mission that arouses peoples’ tribal fervor, luxury marketers would gain higher repeat purchases, greater loyalty, and greater brand advocacy.

Memorabilia

In contrast with the world economy, the FH Internet Unit had an extremely good year in 2010, with results showing a marked upturn.

The number of auctions of counterfeit watches withdrawn from the web by the FH Internet Unit for all platforms at a world level broke briskly through the 300,000 barrier for the first time last year.

In view of the staggering number of fake Swiss watches on offer, Asian platforms in particular, headed by alibaba.com and DHGate.com, grabbed the attention of FH sleuths. And while initially it was not easy to establish cooperation with the legal services responsible for these sites, results are now promising.

No significant improvement was noted however on the American platform iOffer.com, which takes no serious measures either to automatically eliminate auctions that ostensibly offer counterfeit products or to detect repeat offenders. This platform will therefore be the next priority target of the FH Internet Unit.

Keeping pace with the growing number of auctions requires better methods for detecting and processing offers. The Internet Unit has therefore continued to develop and automate systems enabling it to extract information from relevant pages, achieving gains both in effectiveness and efficiency.

A new strategy has also been developed for sites dedicated to the sale of counterfeit goods, with the emphasis on taking to task those most damaging for the Internet Unit’s member brands. The classification of these sites is established by launching requests on the three most widely used search engines, using several different combinations of key words. Duplicates and non-relevant sites are then eliminated to establish the final classification. In addition, priority is given to hosts that can be qualified as black sheep, which accommodate significantly more illegal sites than others.

Another highlight of the Internet Unit’s activity was the launch last October of the “decoy” website www.replicaswisswatch.com, which by the end of the year had already been consulted by more than 2,000 Internet users. This site, which introduces itself as an ordinary counterfeit site, then delivers a surprise to web surfers with a prevention message and a warning, with links to information pages concerning counterfeiting in general. Another measure designed to prick the conscience of consumers is a form made available to Internet users (www.fhs.ch/en/reportabuse.php) through which we can be notified of any kind of watch counterfeiting. Many Swiss and foreign media have applauded this initiative.

Several contacts have been forged with the anti-fraud services of credit cards issuers, who seem more inclined than in the past to help rights holders, particularly by blocking online payment methods used by counterfeiters.

It will be noted lastly that scientific research has not been omitted from the equation, since the FH helps actively to improve processing and analysis systems by collaborating with the Institute of Police Science of the University of Lausanne and the Haute école spécialisée bernoise, particularly on development of the WebIntelligence project, which will be presented in 2011

Georges Kern e Knut Frostad

Lausen, Switzerland, January 17, 2011 – RONDA is adding two more new products to its “Mastertech” line this summer. Since 2006, the Swiss manufacturer of watch movements has introduced various big date and retrograde models to the market. Particularly the asymmetrical creation of caliber 7004.P has generated lively interest among customers, as its arrangement of functions allows sophisticated dial designs.

The demand for large watches has grown steadily over the last few years. RONDA is therefore launching at the Baselworld 2011 show its “Mastertech 8000” line, offering the watch making industry for the first time XXL chronographs in the overlarge 15”’ (33.80 mm) size. This will give the manufacturers fresh impulses for large timepieces with chronograph functions.

The 8040.B model features a classic design with three eyes at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, as well as a big 3.6 x 5.5 mm date indicator. The caliber 8040.N, on the other hand, hits the lights not only with its chronograph but also with a retrograde day indicator at 12 o’clock.

1908:
Hans Wilsdorf creates the name Rolex. After his death the place at the head of the company is taken by André Heiniger in 1963. In 1992 Patrick Heiniger succeeds his father André as Rolex CEO.

1926:
Rolex creates the first really waterproof case in the world. The famous OYSTER is born. The Oyster watch combines an extremely sturdy case, with a case back and a winding crown, all absolutely waterproof. The patented TWINLOCK winding crown is wound against the case and makes this generally very vulnerable point of the watch, extremely resistant. One year later, Mercedes Gleitze, swims across the icy waters of the English Channel wearing a ROLEX OYSTER PRECISION on her wrist. The watch, produced in 1926, made from 9 ct gold with octagonal case (31x27 mm), still worked perfectly after the 15 hours and 15 minutes swim.

1928:
The Rolex PRINCE, also nicknamed “Doctor watch”, was introduced for the first time.

30’s:
The first chronographs with “push-back case” appear. Different models are advertised: from the single button chronographs (refs. 2022-2023-2303) to the chronograph ref. 2508, equipped with two buttons on both sides of the winding crown.

1931:
A new chapter in watch history: the ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL is born, the first waterproof selfwinding watch. The automatic movement is mainly identified with a type of watch which attracts the attention of the whole collectors’ world, it is a model which made watch history: the “BUBBLE BACK”, an Oyster usually called “OVETTO” in Italy.

Büben & Zorweg Time Mover.
