He had been convinced by some of the country’s leading scientists that a national observatory was needed to keep pace with Britain’s seafaring rivals, and that astronomy held the key to finding the 'so-much-desired longitude of places'.

Over the centuries, the Observatory firmly established itself as a pioneering place for astronomy, timekeeping and navigation, becoming the centre of global time when it was established as the location of the Prime Meridian of the World.

Today the Royal Observatory holds a unique position as a historic site, museum and scientific centre, where astronomers bring modern astronomy to life through planetarium shows, courses, school visits, observing sessions and more.
