IWC will be the official timekeeper at the next edition of the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly Whitbread Round the World Race). The partnership agreement was signed on 25 January in Alicante by Georges Kern, CEO of the Schaffhouse firm, and Kurt Frostad, CEO of the organising committee of this ocean regatta.
The Volvo Ocean Race is quite simply the “Everest” of the sailing world. The race is both a world class competition and a hi-tech adventure, offering a unique mix of glamour on dry land and excitement and endurance at sea. It is also undeniably the world’s largest ocean race and one of the most demanding crewed sporting events. The 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race will start from the Spanish port of Alicante in October 2011, finishing in Galway, Ireland, in July 2012. Over a period of nine months, crews will cover a distance of 39,270 nautical miles across some of the world’s most unpredictable seas.
IWC will donate the prize for the 24 hour record of each stage, which will be awarded at the prize-giving ceremony at each stopover (Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, Itajai, Miami, Lisbon and Lorient). A special prize will also go to the fastest crew over 24 hours.
