Pré-Baselworld 2011 - Heritage Watch Manufactory Centenus

Heritage Watch Manufactory Centenus.

Again constructed by master watchmaker Karsten Fraessdorf, and based on the innovative development of the MAGNUS movement with its unique precision balance, its subtly engineered mechanisms for regulation of the escapement, the balance and the balance wheel itself, the CENTENUS underpins the standard for the highest mechanical perfection achievable. At the same time, however, the CENTENUS actually displays the traditional Chinese system of measuring time as well as simultaneously indicating the Western system. The figures on the dial underneath the twelve o’clock numerals display zodiacal icons showing the Twelve Earthly Branches that represent the Chinese arrangement of the day into twelve units, each being called a ‘shíchén’. The larger of the two dials at the nine o’clock position reflects the Chinese division of the day into 100 units of time, each one being a ‘kè’. Each kè represents 14 minutes and 24 seconds in our time system. The small dial at the nine o’clock position reflects the subdivision of a kè into 60 units, the unit being known as an ‘old fen’. Karsten Fraessdorf: “These days, alternative digital time systems are being discussed more and more. That is why it was so fascinating to find out that more than 3000 years ago the Chinese had already subdivided the day into 100 units. For us, combining this ancient decimal system with our time system was very exciting. With the CENTENUS we are convinced we have created something extraordinary that combines the essence of the Orient and the Occident in a unique manner – it is our first timepiece to honour the first instrument display from ancient times.”

The technical perfection of the movement concept of the CENTENUS finds its counterpart in the restrained, elegant design of Eric Giroud. With its noble discretion and classic design elements, the CENTENUS perfectly matches the current collection from this Swiss watch manufactory. Eric Giroud: “The art of creating a truly unique Chinese watch lies in focussing on the elements that define its real value instead of just striking symbols. And for the CENTENUS this is clearly the movement concept, which allows two different time systems to be displayed.”

With the presentation of the CENTENUS in Basel, the HERITAGE WATCH MANUFACTORY crowns its first presentation before a wider public. At the same time, the CENTENUS represents the beginning of a collection of regional timepieces. Christian Gütermann, Member of the Board: “CENTENUS marks the start of a range of watches that we will develop and construct over time which will take into account the different regions of the world we live in. In all of these watches, it will be our credo to intelligently combine the highest achievable mechanical precision with regional characteristics in measuring time. We plan to present the next timepiece in this collection in 2012 – but I shall not disclose more for the time being!”

About the HERITAGE WATCH MANUFACTORY

The HERITAGE WATCH MANUFACTORY, headquartered in the Swiss city of Neuchâtel, makes high-precision mechanical watches in small quantities. Characteristic of these chronometers are their extraordinary longevity and a timekeeping accuracy that completely redefines the previously held understanding of precision in mechanical watches. In order to produce these chronometric masterpieces, the Manufactory, established in 2010 and in private possession, works exclusively with movements it has itself conceived and constructed in years of development.
