A Zen story, or a Zen kōan, is very difficult to understand until you understand what we are doing moment after moment. But if you know exactly what we are doing, moment after moment, then it is not so difficult. There are many, many kōans. Recently I have spoken several times about a frog. Each time I talked about the frog, people laughed.
When you
come here to sit, you may think you are doing something special. While your
husband is sleeping, you are here practicing zazen. You may think, “I am doing
something important, and my husband is lazy.” That may be your understanding of
zazen.
But look at
the frog. A frog also sits like this, but it has no idea of zazen. If something
annoys it, it makes a face. If something to eat appears, it snaps and eats —
still sitting. This is what the frog does.
Actually,
this is our zazen. We are not doing anything special. And yet, we should not
think that we are doing something special.
