Because of technological improvements, clocks shifted in use: originally giant models proclaiming God’s cosmic magnificence, they shrunk to become table-top instruments measuring out human existence. The symbolism works both ways: clocks modeled the operation of the universe, which in its turn was seen to display clock-like features of precision, circular motion, and cyclical repetition.
