Today the decision had to be made that Monday is a no-go for the Red Bull Stratos Launch. Cold Front pushes Red Bull Stratos Launch to Tuesday.
The latest update provided by Red Bull Stratos Meteorologist Don Day reveals that the timing of the predicted cold front will not develop to the Mission's advantage. A sharp drop in temperature, low clouds and some drizzle will affect south eastern New Mexico from late Sunday as upslope easterly winds develop. While the weather will greatly improve on Monday with clearing skies and warmer temperatures, wind speeds are expected to be above acceptable levels for a safe launch of Felix Baumgartner's massive 750 foot balloon in the morning. Wind speeds are forecast to be between 5 to 10 mph from the south east with most critical winds above the ground reaching 10 to 15 mph at balloon top level.
“The good news is that we usually have a day or two after this type of cold front moves through where the weather can be favorable for a balloon launch.” predicts Don Day.
A launch on Monday had to be called off due to safety reasons, Tuesday October 9th is the new target date, the outlook looks really favorable.
