LOT#: 1301-208

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Seb Schwartz, Nurnberg, a silver cruciform watch based on the identical pattern to one we sold last year, consigned to us from Portugal by a collector who saw our last example. There are two listings for Sebald Schwarz or Schwartz, one from Augsburg active early 17th century, the second of the same name shown as active in Nurnberg [Nuremberg] circa 1580; this watch is by the same maker as the last, early 17th century, only showing the other city. Silver cruciform pre-balance spring verge fusee, 51mm x 81mm from pendant top to button tail, single iron hand, brass chapter with half-hour marks, silver dial with depictions of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, the pierced and engraved silver case with scene of the crucifixion of Christ and memento mori below, the back with soldiers turning away from Christ, the sides with two apostles, the movement of riveted and pinned construction, this example with its original early period balance cock, but again missing the dumbell or simple wheel balance, retaining the catgut fusee cord and all train gearing, escape wheel in place but perhaps with broken internal pivot, worm drive for setting up barrel pressure (also called "rack and snail"), in original period condition without repairs or restoration, circa 1620-30. There are slight differences from the prior watch in all piercing and engraving as one would expect from hand execution, but perhaps the two were intentionally executed as a pair. We cannot find any other examples of the maker's work. An extremely unusual find.

CONDITION: NR, train complete, the plates in good original condition with dirt and tarnish, pillars are sound. Hand and dial original, the hand with whitish corrosion but setting with ease, the catgut fully wrapped around the barrel, with broken off section still on the fusee, the set-up gear for the barrel is encrusted in rust, and we have made no attempt to remove any of the bloom. The fusee arbor also is rusty where it protrudes through the cock foot. Case in excellent condition with no breaks or losses, as with the other watch there is minor compression of the front onto the axis of the hand, the ring bow and swivel pendant appear original. Again, this watch only lacks the balance of dumbell or simple wheel form. The balance cock has had a screw added for security at a later date. This watch example was also never converted to balance spring. No screws were used in the construction of the watch, all elements are secure, and the watch has not been disassembled. The movement pushes out from back to front for inspection. Finding a pair of these watches in two completely different parts of the world is really quite astonishing.
