Swatch Ugo, a limited edition watch of 3,535 pieces – numbered of course.

Swatch has your number

Numbers certainly count in a special exhibition by Italian artist Ugo Nespolo, hosted by Swatch at the Cité du Temps from 1 March to 1 April 2018. “NUMBERS” salutes the 35th birthday of Swatch and showcases a shared fascination with figures and the creative possibilities they encompass. No prizes for guessing that the exhibition is made up of 35 pieces, including a broad spectrum of techniques, languages and cultural references. There are paintings, screen prints and sculptures with topics and styles ranging from mathematical to mythological and from symbolic to surreal. Just like Swatch, the artist loves to tease and please with bright colors, inviting viewers or wearers to add things up for themselves.

The catalogue accompanying “NUMBERS” is a work of art in itself. Accompanying the beautiful visuals is a thought-provoking essay on numbers and on Ugo Nespolo’s work by the noted Italian mathematician and writer, Piergiorgio Odifreddi. The friendship between brand and artist was born in the 1990s when Ugo Nespolo designed two Swatch Art Specials. In 2018 he’s contributing to the 35th birthday celebrations with Swatch Ugo, a limited edition watch of 3,535 pieces – numbered of course. And as a final reminder, the number 35 calls out from the dial in the artist’s beloved vibrant colours. Purple, voted colour of the year in 2018, is the signature of the creation.

Ugo Nespolo came into the world in 1941 in Mosso, Biella. He is known well beyond the Italian borders for his painting, sculpture, experimental films and artistic collaborations in advertising, theatre and literature. After graduating from the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin he went on to obtain a degree in Modern Literature from the University of Turin. He launched his art career in the 1960s in the context of Pop Art. He spent a lot of time working in the United States, particularly in the 1980s. Since 2010 he has been an honorary member of Immagine & Poesia, an artistic literary movement founded in Turin. Look after number one and treat yourself to a visit!
