March 16, 2011: Participants in the Coloured Stone Commission, which met on Monday and Tuesday at the 2011 CIBJO Congress in Porto, have voted to add to the Gemstone Book the terms “laboratory-created” and “laboratory-grown” as acceptable descriptors for synthetic gemstones. In doing so, the Coloured Stone Commission has become consistent with the decision taken last year by CIBJO’s Diamond Commission.

According to the Blue Book amendment, a synthetic coloured gemstone can be described by the name of the naturally occurring gemstone immediately preceded by the word “synthetic,” “laboratory-created” or “laboratory-grown.”

The Gemstone Book emphasizes that, when displayed, the descriptors “synthetic,” “laboratory-created” or “laboratory-grown” have to be provided equal prominence as the coloured gemstone name.

In the event that the National Jewellery Association, which is a member of CIBJO, deems that there is not an acceptable local direct translation of the English terms “laboratory-grown” or “laboratory-created,” then only the translation of the term “synthetic” should be used.
