O comunicado da marca:

As part of its ongoing commitment to actively engage in the promotion of arts and culture worldwide, Montblanc has recognised for over 20 years the invaluable contribution of modern day patrons of the arts in 12 countries, with its prestigious Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award.

For each annual Award, a unique Limited Edition writing instrument inspired by a historical patron of the arts is commissioned to honour the contemporary ones.

Montblanc’s Patron of Art Edition 2012 pays tribute to the outstanding legacy of Joseph II of Habsburg-Lorraine, Holy Roman Emperor from 1765 to 1790 and ruler of the Habsburg lands.

With its unique design and intricate details, this edition of precious writing instruments is a testament to the influence of the great Enlightenment monarch on the development of arts and culture through out Europe, and most importantly his patronage of the most famous classical composer of all time: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Joseph II: “The Emperor of Reforms” and the Patron of Music Widely known as the “Emperor of Reforms”, Joseph II’s progressive ideas allowed for social and cultural advancement through out his empire. He was the driving force behind the abolition of serfdom, torture and censorship, and he imposed religious tolerance and compulsory elementary education.

From a cultural standpoint, he was particularly focused on the promotion of music and languages, encouraging the arts to flourish, which led to the cultural revival of Vienna. An accomplished cellist and pianist himself, Emperor Joseph II expressed his love of music by providing Mozart with contracts for many years, until his death in 1790.

As part of his reformist spirit, he implemented further decisions of artistic-political importance: Joseph II democratized the opera by opening it to all levels of society and declared the Burgtheater in Vienna the German National Theatre. It was designed to be the stage of Vienna’s cultural upswing, where Mozart moved into the spotlight: for years, Joseph II paved the way for Mozart to become one of the greatest composers in music history. Operas like “Don Giovanni” or “Le nozze di Figaro”, supported by Joseph II caused sensation and enthusiasm in Vienna.

A Tribute to an Enlightened Promoter of Art:

Limited Edition 888 This limited Edition brings to life the splendour and influence of this Holy Roman emperor and his influence as an enlightened patron. Created by master craftsmen in Montblanc’s Ateliers, the writing instrument reflects the delicate features of the imperial coat of arms of Joseph II, which is immortalized as a fine engraving on the 18K rhodium-plated gold nib.

The pen’s cap and body are made of white and blue translucent lacquer, on 925 Sterling silver tubes with fine 750 white gold fittings. The pattern adorning the writing instrument on both cap and body, is inspired by the imperial coat of arms and Joseph’s personal monogram “JII”.

As a reminder of Joseph’s status of ruler, the shape of the cap top represents his imperial crown. With its single sapphire, the clip end is inspired by the Maria Theresa Order, a military decoration founded by Joseph’s mother Empress Maria Theresa and awarded to soldier’s as the highest honour. The cap is enhanced with fine engravings modelled on the Golden Fleece Kollone – the collar of the prestigious Austrian order that symbolizes the union of privileged knights, loyal to the emperor, under the auspices of Joseph II. To complete this masterpiece, the summit of the writing instrument is adorned with the Montblanc emblem in precious mother-of-pearl, set under sapphire-glass.

Montblanc Limited Edition 4810 Limited to 4810 pieces, representing the height of the Mont Blanc mountain in metres, this edition pays tribute to Joseph II’s legacy as a model of patronage and the celebrated aesthetics of his court. The pen’s cap and body are worked with precious lacquer inlays, adorned with imperial crosses and oval beads. While the colours reflect the Austrian red and white, each piece is enhanced with champagne gold-plated fittings reminiscent of the opulence of the Austrian court. The 18K champagne gold nib also features the intricate engraving of Joseph II’s crest.

Like the Edition 888, the cap is shaped like the Imperial crown and the ring features fine engravings modelled on the Golden Fleece Kollone. As a seal of quality and craftsmanship, the summit of the writing instrument is adorned with the Montblanc star in white resin.
